2.5″ String of Dolphins

$10.00

String of Dolphins (Senecio × peregrinus) is one of those plants people stop and do a double-take over: each little leaf is shaped like a tiny leaping dolphin, trailing along thin stems in a way that’s part succulent, part conversation piece. It’s a naturally occurring hybrid of String of Pearls and the Candle Plant, and it’s not the easiest one to track down, which makes it a real favourite among collectors.

It trails and fills out beautifully in a hanging basket or perched on a shelf where those little “dolphins” can dive off the edge. Give it the right light and it grows quickly, rewarding you with long, lush strands in no time.

Care

Light: Bright light is essential: this one loves a few hours of direct sun plus bright indirect light the rest of the day. Too little light and it gets leggy and stretched out fast.

Water: Let the soil dry out completely between waterings, then give it a good soak. Like its succulent cousins, it stores water in its leaves and is much happier under-watered than over-watered.

Humidity: Average room humidity is perfectly fine: no special setup needed.

Pets: Mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested (it’s in the Senecio family, which contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids), so hang it up high and out of paws’ reach.
