Send The “Right Message” With Flowers For Every Occasion
DO YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF MESSAGE YOU’RE SENDING BASED ON YOUR FLOWER CHOICES? WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED! NEVER BE MISUNDERSTOOD AGAIN WITH THESE GOLDEN RULES FOR EVERY OCCASION.
Flowers can send a message of intent purely based on colour and type. A floral arrangement can express the following:
- Love
- Condolences, Grievances
- Apologies
- Celebrations
- Congratulations
We don’t always know what to say, and sometimes it’s more meaningful and impactful to let the flowers talk for you. That is how the name Flowers Talk (my first flower shop) came to be!
Here are a few suggestions to help you send the perfect floral arrangement and convey your feelings.
Expressions of Love Arrangements
One way you can express love with meaning is by sending roses. You’ve seen it in every romantic comedy; roses are classic and timeless. Here are some other flower options and the meaning behind each one.
If you have an anniversary, one way to make it extra special is to recreate the wedding bouquet! If you have a photo from the special day, share it with your favourite florist to have them try to source similar flowers.
I love opportunities to re-create a bridal bouquet to celebrate a special anniversary, especially if I was lucky enough to create the original bouquet for their wedding.
Offering Condolences or Grievances
It’s never easy to let go of someone in your life, regardless of the reason. What’s worse is watching a person you care about go through that and not having words to help bring them any comfort. Sending flowers can let that person know that you are thinking of them.
Whether you send an arrangement to a service or their home, it’s best to keep the flowers neutral. You can’t go wrong with a beautiful fresh mix of seasonal flowers in shades of white and green. I also recommend sending flowers already designed in the vase so that the recipient does not need to fuss over tracking down a vase or container at home. Here are some other flower options and the meaning behind each one.
- White Stargazer Lilies: Sympathy.
- White Roses: Reverence and remembrance.
- Hydrangeas: Gratitude, understanding, and making amends.
- Snapdragons: Grace and strength.
- Orchids: Everlasting love and sympathy.
These are classic and strong and will show the recipient that you are thinking of them as they mourn.
“I’m Sorry” Arrangements
As much as we hate to admit it, no one is perfect, and there will be moments you may find yourself in the doghouse.
Aside from apologizing, giving a heartfelt arrangement can help ease the tension and get you back on track and speaking terms. Here are our top picks for those times you need to say “sorry.”
- Yellow Roses: Innocence and friendship.
- Pink Roses: Appreciation and gratitude.
- Lily of the Valley: Humility, rebirth and devotion.
- White Tulips: New beginnings, peace and forgiveness.
- Blue Hyacinth: Making peace.
- Purple Hyacinth: Regret.
- White Orchids: Agreement and peace.
You may still have some work to do to make things right, but the good news is that if they reject and throw them back at you, it’s not as painful as a toaster!
Celebration Arrangements
If you know the person well, you will most likely know their favourite colours or flower of choice.
If you do not know the recipient well (work colleague, dentist, teacher, dog walker, mother-in-law, etc.), think about what colours they tend to wear most often.
A good rule of thumb is to consider their colour scheme. If they wear:
- White, grey, or black, it might be best to stick with a neutral or softer palette.
- A lot of colour, then you are safe to send a big colourful bouquet.
In this case, you could skip the vase as most people have a selection of vases at home. Here are some other flower options and the meaning behind each one.
- Ranunculus: Charm and attraction.
- Gerbera Daisies: Innocence, purity, cheerfulness and love.
- Orchids: Thoughtfulness, beauty, charm, and love.
- Garden Roses: Friendship, joy, gladness and freedom.
- Peonies: Honour, happiness, wealth and good fortune.
Congratulations Arrangements
There are many reasons to celebrate, and what better way to say congratulations than with flowers! Celebrating a retirement? Go with a mix of tropical flowers! Here are a few recommendations so you can let the pedals do the talking as you celebrate!
Oncidium Orchids: Love and talent.
Mokara Orchids: Love, beauty and refinement
Free Spirit Roses: Everlasting happiness.
Yarrow: Courage and bravery.
Solidago: Good fortune and growth.
Depending on where you send it, you could choose to have the flowers arranged in a vase or without. If you are sending them to the office, in the vase is best. When sending them to a home, you can forgo the vase.
Whatever your reason is for sending flowers, we are always here to help with suggestions based on the occasion, seasonal availability and budget.
